Winter Greens

Even though we have had a very mild winter, it is still cold and brown and a little gloomy outside. It has been nice to have a little bit of growth and green in our home this winter.

I remember having paperwhites in our home when I was younger. I thought they were beautiful, but stinky. I saw an idea in the December issue of Whole Living magazine that I thought would be a fun way to grow some beautiful flowers during the winter. The article recommended putting the paperwhite bulbs in various glass jars. The bulbs don't need much soil and are very easy to take care of. The blooms are beautiful and fragrant, but I like the smell of spring during the cold winter days (I think they smell good now). The article gave a very good piece of advice. When the tall stalks started to droop, or even lay down in some cases, I added a few drops of rubbing alcohol to the water and they stood right back up.

We have also enjoyed the addition of some succulents and air plants. They are all very easy to take care of. I have learned that succulents really don't like a lot of water. I have killed a few by over watering them. The air plants are the easiest plants to care for. They don't need to be put in soil and they don't need a lot of water. I just soak them in a little water every few weeks.

I put an air plant in a birds nest that we found on the ground below one of the trees in our yard. I put another one in a piece of coral that we found on the beach in Hawaii. The coral sits on a piece of driftwood that we found on the beach in Washington. It's nice to have a touch of nature inside.
